AMC LEAD CLIMBING SCHOOL
This is an advanced climbing class. Even if you do not plan on leading,
you will learn much about the dynamics of climbing, and it will make you a more knowledgeable
climber. Please read our disclaimer. There will be no "true" lead climbs during the class.
Protecting a climb is a different skill from climbing itself. We will talk about the dynamics of
lead falls, how to prepare for a climb, the differences between single-pitch and multi-pitch,
the differences between bolted routes and natural pro, and we will provide actual leading exercises.

ITEMS YOU NEED FOR THE CLASS: (Note: On the first night, you will not need anything)
- All climbing gear (harness, prusiks, biners, etc.)
- Helmet - mandatory
- All climbing gear
- Specifically needed:
- 2 -20' (untied length) slings, preferably different colors
- 2 -10' (untied length) slings, preferably different colors
- Nut pick
- Quickdraws w/biners - at least 5 per person
- All pro that you own - cams, hexes, wired nuts, Tri-cams, etc.
- Consider combining with another to have enough gear
- Hiking boots or shoes with stiff soles for Saturday, climbing shoes for
Sunday
- Optional: Kneepads for Saturday ($3-6 at Home Depot, $5 volleyball pads at sporting goods stores)
AGE LIMITS:
Students must be at least 14 (students 14-15 must be accompanied by an older adult)
CLASS FEE:
$75 plus membership if not already a member ($30 for an individual and $35 for a family).
Membership is good through December 2008.
REGISTRATION INFO: Reservations are recommended.
- Print out an
AMC Release of Liability Form and also a
Membership Application Form
(please print the form on one sheet of paper, front and back) if you have not already filled them out.
Read and initial each paragraph, then fill out and sign the release, then fill out the Membership Form
and sign the medical disclaimer at the bottom. Students under 18 MUST have the release and disclaimer
signed by a parent or guardian.
- Make a check payable to AMC Lead School for $75, $105 or $110 (see Class Fee above).
- Mail the check and the release form to: AMC Lead School, PO Box 11883, Tempe, AZ 85284.
No credit cards accepted.
